Storm clouds, Lake Wakatipu

Originally uploaded by Ian@NZFlickr

I have taken photos from this vantage point, Bennett’s Bluff, all my life. Stopping to take a photo here is compulsory on the way to Kinloch (which was settled by my great great grandfather, who built what is now known as Kinloch Lodge) and on the way back.

This is a photo I have saved from the flickr.com website I mentioned in an earlier post.

I saw so many pics of Lake Wakatipu taken from people who live all over the world! They’re saved on my www.flickr.com/photos/rivettingkatetaylor (I think!)

But the 40mm we’ve had in the past two days might be!

1mm is not a drought breaker

Last night’s forecast rain never eventuated. My clothesline is full of clothes to tempt the rain clouds to Takapau.

The rain gauge had a whole 1mm in it this morning and the gauge itself was brought into the kitchen to have the cobwebs washed out of it.

The TV weather slot glistened with little rain clouds across the country, but they’re obviously skirting us.

Three friends across the country texted me (text me? texted me? hell, I’m the writer here) to say they had rain, but alas, did not receive the same reply.

Gosh this is a bit melodramatic today isn’t it.

Number one on the job list has been ticked off. The office is still a bomb site but you get that. Each pile of paper and bits&pieces has its own home – and believe it or not, dear hubby, I DO KNOW WHERE EVERYTHING IS!!!

Right. Number two on the list. I can’t wait to find the time to download my photos from the holiday and tell you a bit about where we went and what we did.

Soon.

those poor Aussies… and others

Tears have welled up in my eyes and a lump formed in my throat so many times in the past 48 hours.

Those poor people in Victoria, Australia, who have lost everything. Many of them have paid the ultimate price for not leaving soon enough or not being quick enough to escape the wrath of a fast-moving and deadly fire front.

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun

And a special mention to the people being flooded in northern Queensland, their plight is being somewhat overlooked as disaster hits at the other end of the spectrum.

Last night’s David Doherty documentary on TV1 played with the emotions too. Boy do you feel for that guy. Wrongly imprisoned for three years for the abduction and rape of an 11-year-old girl when all along his DNA did not match the profile of the offender. Horacio, Mac and Grissom would never let that happen (if you’re a CSI fan like me) and to think one of the guys who befriended him in prison was the real culprit. He missed the last years of his father’s life (who never saw him released) and the early years of his son.

My hat goes off to Donna Chisholm, the reporter, and the actress who played her (must look that one up). And Peter Ellis is one of my favourite NZ actors. Well done. And, it was great the way they took the last paper headline (NOT GUILTY after the retrial) and morphed it from the TV one into the real one featuring a photo of the real David Doherty.

So, you will have guessed by now (if you’ve read some of my previous entries) that my computer is back!

Standing at my car on Thursday afternoon after being told by Noel Leemings that it still wasn’t there despite being dispatched from “the people” on Tuesday morning, I decided to vent my anger. I was far too mad to drive away and road rage would not look good on the CV.

So in I marched to speak to the manager to say enough was enough and I had had enough and they weren’t doing enough. He was great (or a very good actor – Noel Leemings customer service trainers pat yourselves on the back).

HOWEVER, I was torn between wanting to smack him in the chops and declaring my love for him when he walked back into the showroom holding my laptop. The stupid stupid stupid chicks who had gone to look for it that morning and again that afternoon had either been looking in the wrong place or the machine itself had been placed on the wrong shelf. UNBELIEVABLE! But at least I have my baby back and my RSI can assert itself with avengence.

Long live the laptop.

Red at night

The saying “red at night, shepherd’s delight” usually means a beautiful day tomorrow. So if you’re in the middle of a huge drought and nothing less than an inch of rain would constitute a beautiful day, does tonight’s red sunset mean rain is on the way?

First day back

School is back and it’s very tiring. It’s hard work being at home all day without the children. I had to actually work.

The news

Sorry about the delay in telling you the news (and no I’m not pregnant).

My mum got married!

Not to my Dad, he passed away six years ago, but he would have been smiling down on the old chick as she and Jim made the move from acting like an old married couple to actually being one!

We had an inkling the family gathering would be more than met the eye, but it was still a great surprise.

And I now have three new step brothers after a lifetime of three big sisters!

The delay in passing on the news was the complete and utter incompetence of the HP fixing people in NZ. I waited for months with faulty sound and microphone and a couple of other things because they weren’t essential to me making money (it’s just really hard to skype!)

So I thought, obviously stupidly, that taking my leased computer into Noel Leeming on December 19th to be sent away to “the people” was a wise idea because we wouldn’t be back from the South Island until January 23rd and I wouldn’t be seriously tapping away at the keyboard until the kids go back to school. WHICH IS TOMORROW!

President Obama

Interrupting the holiday to watch the inauguration of the new American president wasn’t something I was expecting. But if there’s one thing the Yanks do well it’s live television.

Worth noting from press coverage this week, well, the thing that will stick in my mind any way, is the fact that the building he was surrounded by during the swearing in ceremony was built by slaves. While he is not a descendent of slaves, his wife and children are. What a long way the world has come in the past century. In the past 20 years in terms of racial harmony.

But not religious harmony. Our world’s greatest wars have been and continue to be caused by religion.

Only history will tell whether George W Bush’s “war on terrorism” will continue to divide the muslim and western worlds.

For now, back to CNN, my early morning cup of tea, and day 16 of our holiday in the South Island. Two days to go and then you’ll get the full force of my holiday news – and boy, do I have news!

Two sleeps to go

Two sleeps to go.

The letter to Santa will be rewritten from the last time we had Christmas in Gisborne. Grandma doesn’t have a chimney you see, so we have to advise the big man which door will be unlocked.

You should visit homepaddock’s wordpress site for Ele’s 12 days of Christmas with a rural theme. Very funny – dying to know if she gets her Christmas tree…

http://homepaddock.wordpress.com/2008/12/23/two-days-before-christmas

We decorated our Christmas tree at the weekend. You may think that’s late but we don’t put anything Christmasy up until hubby has had his birthday on the 17th. Only fair. Not that the bloke would care anyway. Maybe he’s secretly pleased? Bah Humbug.

On a sad note, we had a funeral today. Kitty, alias fluffy, tiger or a raft of other pet names, has passed away in a screaming heap after coming off second best in a tangle with a car on the road. We miss her.

She’s buried beside Marcella, the last kitten not to survive Takapau-Ormondville highway.

And Sarah wants a dog. Yeah Right.

Have you heard about those Tui ads? Tui is the beer around here. Yes I’d love to have tea at your mother’s place. Yeah Right. No your bum doesn’t look fat in those jeans. I bought it for the stories. I like it when you talk to me during the rugby. Yeah right, Yeah right, Yeah right.

Anyway, it’s late, Kate, and tomorrow is Christmas Eve.

After being one of these horribly annoying people who smugly reminded everyone she had purchased all her Christmas presents throughout the year, I have now been left with twice as many presents as I need and no wrapping paper.

Two sleeps to go.

Relief – I can afford it

My daughter might have scarlet fever.

After temperatures and sore throats and now the rash etc, she might have what used to be a very serious disease. Without treatment it could turn into something worse with long term consequences. Luckily I didn’t have to blink with the $40 charge at the weekend on-duty doctor’s this morning. The penicillin and pamol was another $6.

If I was on a seriously tight budget, which would go first – food, Christmas presents or doctor’s fees? Obviously, doctor’s fees but that’s not fair. Imagine having to make that choice.

Politicians need to spend more money on health.   A lot more.
