Facebook

The social networking site called Facebook has been a delightful time waster for me in the past few months and helps me follow the path to procrastination greatness.

Another old classmate from secondary school logged on this morning from the class ahead of me. Yesterday it was two from two classes younger than me. Back then, way back in the distant memory of the 1980s, two years was a huge gap.

It’s extremely weird to look at these faces now and see glimpses of the teenager you knew, but now they have children, jobs, other interests and lives so distant from the hometown ties.

And embarrassing too as photos appear of Brownies and Guides, trips to the fire station in the primmers, Standard One with major side parts and home made clothes (thanks for that white flowery thing, Mum).

There are people I have often thought of over the years and wondered where they were and what they were up to, there are others I haven’t paid even the passing thought to (but are thrilled to catch up with now) and there are those I still can’t remember.

The place I went to school was made up of half a dozen South Island farming communities – small primary schools converging on a college (form 1 to 7) that we thought was big at the time. About 300 students when I was in the seventh form (started with about 60 kids in form 1 and ended with about 25 in my 7th form – boarding school, moving towns and job leavers). When we were prefects we knew every kid in school by first name (as well as where they lived and what they had for breakfast probably, knowing small town NZ). It’s amazing now to look at schools with 300 in each form year. Students who don’t recognise the names of people who are the same age as them, let alone at the other end of the school.

Anyway, my skills at digression are almost as good as my skills at procrastination.

I talk to one of my bridesmaids now on an almost daily basis thanks to Facebook. I have caught up with many old friends on Facebook. I’m not making any new ones or forming unhealthy relationships with people in a foreign country. That’s not what I’m there for.

As for Bebo. I haven’t been back there for a while because I still want to think of my nieces and nephews as young and innocent, not what I see on their Bebo sites! (They said “omigod Aunty Kate’s on Bebo” like what am I? 90?)

I’m off to appreciate another beautiful, clear, sunny Hawke’s Bay winter day. Well, I would if a neighbouring farm hadn’t lit a fire and smoked the place out. Hopefully it will clear soon!

And then it can rain. I wish I was happy about the beautiful day but we desperately need rain.

More about that tomorrow.  It’s been at least five minutes since I looked at Facebook. 🙂

Here I am!

Just in case you were wondering, I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth.

Quite the opposite, in fact, I have been extremely busy!

And even with all my usual procrastination, there have been no epiphanies of wisdom to spin your way.

But be warned, I have a few good ones up my sleeve now – hopefully I can remember them!

For now though, I am looking good to meet a big deadline on Friday so I’m off to golf.

You gotta love being self employed.

just checking….

Good morning – a little cooler in Hawke’s Bay this morning (my merino has made its first appearance for 2009) but good to see on the news that my corner of New Zealand is one of the spots expected to be warmer than normal in the next three months.

As long as that also involves rainfall, the farmers and I will be happy.

The headline today says just checking…. I have had some searches on wordpress for flickr and wedding photos at Eskdale – so visit www.flickr.com/photos/rivettingkatetaylor if you wish to see my photo collection.

Another successful wedding was held on Saturday – thank you Kat and Geoff for putting your faith in me and thank you to Sam and Rhys (a 2007 wedding) for recommending me!

As per yesterday’s blog about it being my 12th wedding anniversary, it is lovely to see couples still making a stand and telling the world they love each other (whether the children come first or second to marriage makes no difference these days!)

So many traditions have gone by the wayside in the past few decades. Weddings are certainly a lot less formal than they used to be, which is great, but I simply like the fact they are still taking place.

Now if we could only get the divorce rate down…

wedding anniversaries by the dozen

29 March 1997

29 March 1997

I have been married for 12 years.

It  has been a wonderful 12 years that have seen the birth of two wonderful (I’m biased) children and many, many happy times.

Good on ya Thomas, I know I’m not easy to live with!

I mentioned the fact that yesterday was my 12th wedding anniversary while  taking some wedding photos on Saturday. The relatively-young bridal party all gasped appropriately and said congratulations, the same response I gave our builder when he had last Friday off to celebrate his 39th wedding anniversary.

So roll on the next 12 years. Crikey.  I’ll be nearly 50 by then.

where’s the week gone

It has been almost a week since I was tucked up in bed watching American Idol with my lap top on my knees. And what a week.

Saturday was tennis in Dannevirke, Sunday was spent demolishing half of the lean-to on the back of the house, I actually did some work on Monday, school trip to a mushroom farm and a garden centre on Tuesday (Happy Birthday Dad), golf on Wednesday (followed by kids tennis, Sarah’s piano lesson and my netball practice), more work on Thursday and tennis last night (slash/this morning – early hours – it was a good one).

And we now have a working bathroom (no pictures yet). Hurray! That’s a good thing because the old bathroom is gone!

So the kids had a scrap about who had the first shower in the new bathroom, but we’re still brushing our teeth in the kitchen because the vanity’s not in yet (we’re a t the mercy of the plumber).

And so far, it has all been great. Apart from the dust, which is just making friends with the rest of the dust in my house, there haven’t been any problems. Notwithstanding nails in my shoes x3 (only one got blood).

I’m off to Napier today to see a bride and groom. Wedding at the Eskdale Church tomorrow.  Hope it’s fine (and she has a short veil if it’s windy!)

So what’s on the telly?

Sad I know, but I am sitting on my bed on a Friday night watching American Idol. (I like the singing okay, leave me alone).

Not a glass of wine in sight (although that may have something to do with the bourbon I drank last night).

And Vera Duckworth died on Coro (not that I watch it, really I don’t, I just like having something to talk to Mum about….) And I cried! Luckily Thomas wasn’t home yet.

But he is now. Sitting in front of the big TV in the living room swearing periodically at the ref, the Hurricanes and any other bastard that deserves it.

And to top it off, sister Maree texts me from a bonfire at Kinloch. JEALOUS!

Rove might be on the other channel but I can’t see the remote and I can’t be bothered getting out of bed.

The Hurricanes must have won, there hasn’t been an outburst from the cheap seat for a few minutes! Muttering though. MMm. I can’t make it out. Uh oh. It’s aimed at me and the mess on the kitchen bench.

Better go.

How stupid can you be?

Would you walk into a bank with no disguise, pick up a whole lot of cash from the counter and walk back out again?

If the police don’t catch this guy, picture below copied from the NZ Herald website, they are seriously disorganised.

brazen bank robber
brazen bank robber

Some of us wouldn’t walk into a bank and steal money at all, disguise or no disguise, but it’s not good when it’s this brazen. Why do people think they can get away with it?

And it probably all went to buy P.
My windfall is going to come from Lotto. One day. I like the idea of Power Ball. I like the idea of winning a few million dollars. Even a few thousand dollars. Heck, even 5th division 30 bucks would be nice. At least that would pay for next week’s ticket.
And no-one will know it’s me because I buy online.  All of a sudden Takapau will have an influx of money – some floodlights and a couple more astros for the tennis club, new playground and lots of gizmos for the school, improved facilities for the Health Centre, a golf driving range at the golf club so I can improve my game (it’s all about me).
Speaking of golf, I’m hoping tomorrow will be better than last week. We played in the middle of a howling southerly and I don’t want to do that again! Playing in the rain is one thing, playing the wind is another. Both is just mighty pain in the arrrrrrrse, as Paul Henry would say. And suffice to say it was my worst score in a year.
My tennis is no better. Still, netball season starts soon and then I can blame a loss on six other people instead of just myself!

the building continues

And so the mess continues to grow in the Taylor household.

I’m getting good at having lunch with tradesmen. I would tease Hubby about not having to come home anymore, but I can’t guarantee any of them can cook and I can’t have that.

My cooking skills are so advanced that I would be either skinny or dead if left to my own devices for too long.

Having said that, I could live off quiche and baking. I can do quiche. Someone asked me for my recipe the other day! Thank you Aunty Heather! There’s a first for everything.

Cooking fingers and green thumbs are not genetically enhanced as far as I’m concerned.

Anyway, the building… here is what is left of the laundry, Sarah next to the back door, which is now the neighbour for the bathroom door, and Lachlan’s room. Ssooner or later I am going to have to call it the new bathroom!

All very exciting. All three tradesmen here again tomorrow. I might surprise them with scones. Or I might not.

appreciate what you have

I had a stolen moment with a married man at the weekend.

Before you get on your high horse about my morals, I just said it that way to get your attention.  The stolen moment wasn’t what you think – it was more like an epiphany for how people stay so much in love with their partner for decades.

This particular married man is very much in love with his wife of goodness knows how many years, something obvious by the way they spend so much time together, doing things together, putting up with things the other does because… well just because.  I love the easy banter and body language of people who have another half – no matter how long they’ve had them.

There may not be the butterflies-in-the-stomach, weak at the knees thrill of the first flirtacious eye contact with a potential other-half (remember those days?) but the existence of that other person in every facet of your life.

A friend who lost her husband of 30+ years a few years ago said one of the things that hurt the most in her heart was glancing up at a function to see where he was.  But he wasn’t.

Even Mr Builder celebrated 38 years of marriage on Friday (we gave him the day off and they went for a picnic at the beach).  Mum and Dad were married for some 36 years and if her family tree is anything to go by then her and Jim could be married for that long too!

I have no idea what has made me so deep this morning. It may have been a movie I watched about this woman (Sandra Bullock) whose husband is killed in a car accident. They had been drifting apart for ages. Then she wakes up and it’s a few days before the accident and she has the chance to change things. Tragically, he still dies but they get themselves sorted before that. So American. So chick flick. So easy to watch.

I had a long weekend with lots of tennis games (sadly it was loss, loss, loss) on Saturday and netball training yesterday. I even went for a quick run this morning.  It had to be quick because I have to be showered and dressed before the arrival of Mr Builder!

Shower taps, faucets, swivel or fixed, long or short, from the wall or from the bath, brands, stores… my decision of the day. Next decision – do some work!

Building is underway!

Sitting in my office working away feverishly (well, checking Facebook and reading the morning papers) I can see the builder and the plumber having a discussion about my plumbing.

Well, not my plumbing, the plumbing of my house (lol).

We pulled up all the tiles outside the garage and back door last  night so they could follow the pipes out and make sure all was hunky dory for two new toilets and an extra bathroom. All we need now is the bill for a new septic tank. Not!

Our house is in an interesting state. Everything from inside the linen cupboard (and everything that has been shoved on top of it since we moved here four and a half years ago) is now at one end of my office.

Master Six has moved into Miss Eight’s room (and was very amused by the fact that his bunk is now two single beds) and lots of extra “things” are stacked not-so-neatly in the hallway and in our room.

Master Six did enjoy being a builder the other day (although it was Miss Eight’s insistence on wearing her favourite shorts (now too small) that made her look the part of the builder….).

Here are some photos of the boys at work but not Sarah’s builder’s crack.

I promise you won’t get a day by day blow of every board lifted or every pipe installed, just how it’s affecting daily life here in the Taylor household.

Walking out onto the porch to go into the bathroom via where the bath used to be is a novelty that may wear off fairly quickly. But hopefully by then we will have a new bathroom inside and they will demolish the old one!

Summary of events – Lachlan moves into Sarah’s room. Lachlan’s room becomes bathroom. Linen cupboard becomes hall way. Lean-to on rear of house demolished. Laundry and back door built where bathroom used to be. Wardrobe where laundry used to be and new master bedroom and ensuite!

“Lecky” has just arrived according to Mr McHardy, the builder. Three tradesmen here at the same time on Day 2 of the project. Long may it last!
