You put up with a problem with your laptop because you’re working to deadline. Then it dies. On deadline.
Then you realise the back up programme you thought was backing up your work to an external hard drive… wasn’t.
Think bad words. Think very bad words.
At moments like this you need something stronger than Toyota!
When I went back to university a few years ago I learned – from a similar experience as yours – to email essays to a hotmail or other web account address while I was writing them.
That way if the computer died I’d have lost only the last 10 minutes or so of writing. It’s a good idea for journalism too.

I hope you have a very handy IT man close by who got it all back for you

Well. If anyone saw yesterday’s Dominion (rural features in the business section), they will know I made deadline (although my friendly sub might not have been so friendly by Tuesday afternoon…)
The computer problem has been fixed and the external hard drive is now backing up! And after the advice of my friend Ele (homepaddock) I have invested in a couple of spare USB drives to save projects as I am working on them. Covering all bases, as it were.
I do have one question though. I went to Murphy’s Law without logging in and saw a Google ad on my page. So who’s making the money out of that then?
